FSV Mainz 05 vs 1.FC Nuernberg

Mainz solidifies second place on the table with a well deserved win over Nuernberg.

Mainz started this game in second place with 27 points, 7 behind league leader Borussia Dormund. A win would secure second place for them for Matchday 14. Nuernberg started out in 13th place with 18 points.

In the initial stages Nuernberg tightened its defence and made it virtually impossible for Mainz to penetrate. Despite this, Mainz scored in the 27th minute, when Fuchs took a Corner kick, which Fathi managed to direct toward the goal. Schuerrle was in the right spot to make it 1:0 for Mainz. That was the result after the first 45 minutes.

Fuchs continues his brilliance in the second half with a freekick into the five yard area, this time Schnuerrle moves the ball to Nikolce Noveski, the Mainz Captain, who easily taps it across the goalline in the 54th minute, 2:0 Mainz.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were similar to the first half, with the exception that now Mainz closed its defence and Nuernberg was desperately looking for holes in Mainz's defence.

Despite Nuernberg pushing to get the equalizer it was Sammi Allaqi that scored the 3rd goal for Mainz in the 86th minute, putting the game out of reach for Nuernberg. After a throw half way across the field by Wetklo, Allaqui picks up the ball goes around one defender and runs toward the goal, he choses not to pass to Szalai who has come along with him, instead he lifts the ball past Schaefer and into the net. 3:0 Mainz. The win guarantees Mainz second place at the end of this matchday.
