Allergy Season is Here

Mattress Firm is advertising on billboards and television that mattresses over eight years old need to be replaced.

The text: “Over the years, your mattress practically doubles in weight from sweat, dead skin and millions of dust mites. That doesn’t just sound unhealthy- it is unhealthy - especially if you have allergies or asthma. To find out how old your mattress is, check the tag. If it’s over 8, it’s time to replace. Let Mattress Firm’s professional Sleep Consultants help you find the right mattress for a great and healthy night’s sleep, tonight. “

If you are sleeping well on a 20-year-old mattress and have no allergies, should this apply to you? “Replace Every 8” is a catchy marketing theme. They can quote doctors who talk about the health consequences of dust mites and other matter accumulated in the mattress over time, but everyone does not suffer from allergies or asthma. Lifting a heavy mattress to flip it annually can be difficult, but is it enough incentive to spend money on a new mattress?

For some people around the world who sleep on dirt or blankets on the ground, the thought of throwing out an eight year old mattress (if they’ve ever heard of one to think about it) is inconceivable. For many in the United States, throwing out a mattress that is comfortable is unfeasible as well, for both financial and comfort reasons. It is risky to purchase a new mattress because it is impossible to know how comfortable it will be after a couple of weeks. Twenty years ago some mattresses and box springs sold for $100. Now the cost is much more significant with the new technology used to make mattresses allegedly more comfortable.

When you hear “Replace Every 8” remember it is a marketing slogan used to persuade you to buy something. Do what is right for you.
