This is both a sad and dreadful story. Today Satpal Kaur-Singh, 44 years old, pleaded guilty in court to the manslaughter of her autistic son, by reason of diminished responsibility. Her 12 year old son Ajit Singh-Mahal was found dead at the family home last February. How did she kill him? She forced him to drink bleach. What a terrible death that must have been.
It has now been revealed that social workers had concerns about the boy's well being some months before he died. Ajit was fully reliant on his Mum. He could not communicate easily and was not mobile outdoors. This dependence of course left him very vulnerable.
At a meeting with social services on 9th February 2010 Ms Kaur-Singh refused to co-operate with a plan to review Ajit's care. Despite the fact that she appeared calm and in control throughout the meeting it effected her badly. Later in the day she tearfully called her sister about the outcome of the meeting.
Hours later she made Ajit drink a cup of bleach, before consuming some herself, about one hour later. As is so often the case, she must have had second thoughts. Later still she called 999 and said: "I've just murdered my son and I've tried to kill myself."
The officers arrived to find Ajit already dead and his mother close by. His Mum claimed she heard voices in her head telling her to finally put an end to her son and his problems. It has been revealed that she thought many people, including family, friends and neighbours were against her.
The case has been adjourned until psychiatric reports are received. There will also now be a serious case review by local authorities. All of this though does not help poor Ajit who died of ingestion of a "caustic liquid" and suffered multiple organ failure. RIP
