Poppies are planted for their beauty and ornamantel use but in some places in the U.S.a license in needed to grow these flowers as besides other opiates,opium is obtained from it.
Poppies are grown in Europe,The United States,Afghanistan,India,Pakistan and many other countries as many opiates including opium,morphine,thebaine, codeine,papaverine and noscapine.
The Latin botanical name means 'sleep-bringing poppy' as it refers to the sedative properties of some of these drugs.
When the NATO forces were able to eliminate the Talibaan from Marja,of the southern province of Helmand it was a dilema to win the local people's trust.The reason being the foreign troops wanted to stop the growing of poppies by the Afghanis as the business was financing the insurgents.
They had to let the farmers continue growing the controversial flower for a while but now the farming of poppies has been curtailed to quite an extent.
