Bolivian President Evo Morales has undergone left knee surgery.

According to media reports, Morales, 51, underwent the surgery at a clinic in Cochabamba city.

The president will have to take rest for three weeks after the surgery, which lasted for about three hours.

"The president, due to his intense daily and sports activity, was having pains in the his left knee that had developed over a long time" and so "a medical board in recent days recommended the procedure," the official news agency of Bolivia said.

"It was an old and serious ailment that had prevented him not only from taking part in sports activities, but caused persistent pain and difficulty in walking."
