Haiti’s Perfect Storm: Hurricane Tomas follows Cholera and the Quake

Already reeling from a recent cholera outbreak and widespread quake destruction, much of Haiti now finds itself underwater.

Torrential rain and driving winds from hurricane Tomas have lashed the Caribbean country, prompting widespread flooding.

The storm battered the town of Leogane, near to the capital Port au Prince, forcing families who had already lost their homes in one disaster to flee another.

One of the main concerns is increased ground water will worsen the recent cholera epidemic in Haiti.

With Tomas expected to strengthen again before it fizzles out, the UN and aid agencies have gone on maximum alert in case there is another humanitarian emergency.

On Friday, authorities were working to try and evacuate residents in flood battered coastal towns to higher ground.

At least three people are believed to have died crossing swollen rivers, while in the capital some 1.3 million quake survivors still remain housed in squalid makeshift camps with little protection from the elements.
