It's an interesting concept. Thus far I hadn't seen many versions of it, but it's something I'll certainly try. If you actually read any of my work ~ you already know I blog for peace regularly. I've often thought about how lucky I am to have lived in relative peace for most of my life. I look @ the kids that grow up & die in war torn areas & don't know how their families get through it all.
A young man I've known since he was around eight was killed in a motorcycle accident last week & it's killing me, his family, his friends and friends of all of us that knew him. I'd known the young man for a good fifteen years, watched him grow & like all his family felt we had plenty of time to watch his life unfold. I'd like to believe that when these things happen, it can make us all more aware of the values of life. When something like this (the death of a young person) becomes a regular occurence I suspect it lessens the value of life for all around those young people. As a person that has friends and family dedicated to peace ~ I don't normally worry about losing my friends' kids to war time action, but kids die in war every day. Just in this area of Texas alone ~ I see news reports of kids coming home in a box at least once or twice a month. I have a young neighbor that is set on becoming a marine & no matter how I try to discourage him, he stays pretty convinced.
I don't have children of my own, but I like kids & know plenty from the children of friends to the kids I work with ~ I would like to see them all live long happy lives. People try to convince us that the gvt. wants us to fight for our freedoms, but the reality of it all right now is that we (our country's kids) are fighting for the corporate right to keep their wealth. I've said before & I stand by the concept now, that an international organization should be responsible for hunting out terrorists, rather than choosing which country might possibly be housing suspected terrorists. The way things went during the Bush Jr. time in The White House, they just chose which countries pissed them off the most & declared them the "Axis of Evil" which was no realistic way to determine guilt. Abu Ghraib still makes me angry on so many levels it's not even fathomable ~ I can only imagine how people that were really affected by that must feel.
I think that unfortunately we have more power as the people than we have begun to understand & it is within our power as people of the world to refuse to fight for our governments. If world leaders believe they should fight, let's put them in a damn boxing ring & let them risk their own skins for a change. If we don't stand up for ourselves against all of our governments, we'll never learn whether it would work or not. I think all the fighting men/women all over the world from commanders to the enlisted folks should just put any weapons they have down & walk away. Maybe this won't happen tomorrow, but it's not so unbelievable to think that we could actually come to our senses as people & begin to spend our resources on things like disease & global hunger.
As always thank for reading this & have a wonderful week end, yer pal Mel Bell.
