Refugees Flee Iraq in Record Numbers

For the third year running, Iraq produced more new refugees in 2007 than any other country in the world. So reports the World Refugee Survey 2008, a brand new study by the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI).

Despite an alleged drop in violence due to President Bush's troop surge, over a million Iraqis fled the country last year, joining another million driven abroad since the United States first invaded Iraq in March 2003. An overwhelming majority of these refugees reside in Syria and Jordan.

Why it took nearly four years to export a million persons, whereas it only took twelve months to shed another million, ought to be worth considering. Could it be that Iraq is less peaceful than it was in 2003? Yes, quite possibly.
