Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh held a 45 minute meeting with US secretary of state Hillary Clinton in Hanoi to discuss the keenly-awaited trip of US President Barack Obama. US President Obama will visit India from November 6. just a day after Diwali.
Hillary will not be accompanying President Obama during his Visit to India.
US secretary of state Clinton briefed the PM on the United States- Pakistan strategic dialogue that just concluded in Washington. President Obama is not visiting Pakistan this time. However, he has promised them $2.29 billion in military aid.
The US government is continually pushing hard to get India to dilute the liability legislation to spare the American companies.
Heart of the discussions was the continuing difficulties of America with Indian nuclear liability law. National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, briefed reporters on the special aircraft of the Prime Minister on way back from Hanoi to New Delhi.
He said, "One of the things that we are working on certainly is, how we will carry our civil nuclear initiative forward. That is one of the issues which I think is being discussed by the Department of Atomic Energy with the US firms concerned."
Menon added that both America and India expressed satisfaction at the state of preparations and looked forward to the conversations that would take place during the November visit.
