Java volcano eruption, people fleeing in panic (latest updates)

People living around Mount Merapi had been told to evacuate

Volcano erupted on Tuesday in Java Island, prompting villagers and residents living in the surrounding areas to flee . Thousands of people have already been evacuated from the slopes of peak Mount Merapi.

According to latest reports, ash had started raining down on frightened residents. Ash is forcing the people to flee the area in a state of panic who are screaming out of fear.

The air is thick with the smell of ash, but breathing was not difficult.

There are so far no reports about the number of casualties. Authorities had been trying since Monday to evacuate more than 11,000 villagers living on the volcano's slopes.

In a 1994 eruption,, 70 people were killed.
