U.S. swimmer Fran Crippen dies during World Cup race

The 26-year-old U.S. swimmer Fran Crippen died on Saturday while competing in the World Cup marathon race in the United Arab Emirates.

It has been reported that Fran Cripper lost his life while he was in the FINA Open Water 10-kilometer World Cup in Fujairah, south of Dubai.

According to the reports, Fran Crippen fell unconscious during the final leg of the 10km race and was found into the water after two hours when every other swimmer had reached the finishing line. Deep sea divers had to go under water to search for Fran Crippen.

The water temperature on the swimming competition was reportedly in the mid to high 80s, and several swimmers suffered heat exhaustion and were treated in a nearby hospital after the race.

A native of Conshohocken, Pa., Fran Crippen was an 11-time all-American at Virginia and his family is well known in the swimming world. One of Fran Crippen's sisters, Claire is a senior swimmer at Virginia, while the other sister Teresa swims at Florida. The oldest sister of Fran Cripper, Maddy was a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team.
