Since its devastating earthquake, Haiti is plagued by yet another crisis as cholera has broken out in the country. According to reports by MSNBC, more than 140 people have died because of cholera and the number is increasing at an alarming rate. The President of Haiti claimed that measures were being taken to curb the spreading of cholera. Many aid teams with medicines and supplies from all over the world have reached Haiti in order to help those affected by cholera.
The central region of Haiti is most affected by cholera and there’s fear that the disease will spread to the regions hosting the thousands of earthquake affectees.
Cholera is essentially an internal infection of the intestines by bacteria that transmits by means of contaminated water and food. Cholera can be treated through antibiotics and rehydration but could cause deaths immediately if left untreated. Hospitals in Haiti are overwhelmed with the people infected with cholera and need help from the international community.
