The Christopher Columbus Day is being celebrated in America today. There are some facts about Christopher Columbus that most of the people are unaware of.

To start with, Christopher Columbus did not ever set foot on American soil; he landed on an island in the Bahamas. Secondly, not everyone considers Christopher Columbus as a hero, rather many think of him as the person who was responsible for the death of millions, slavery and the spread of disease to Columbus.

It is believed that Christopher Columbus was addicted to opium, which is the modern-day heroin constituent. Another popular theory about Christopher Columbus is that he brought back the disease called syphilis to Europe. The explorer's real name wasn't Christopher Columbus, but was close to Crisstofa Corumbo.

Since 1937, the United States has been celebrating the Christopher Columbus Day. It was New York that first celebrated it on 12th October 1792.
