At around midnight, 236 passengers and crew of Lithuanian "Lisco Gloria" ferry were on their way to Kiel in northern Germany, near the island of Fehmarn when the explosion went off.

The passengers and crew were rescued by six ships in the area nearby.

Around 20 people were taken by navy helicopters to the hospital in Kiel where they were treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

The rest continued their journey to Kiel on another ferry said a spokesman for the German Central Command.

The cause of the explosion is not known and fire fighting units were still putting out the blaze by morning.

That's tragic. What could have been the cause. Glad to know that only minor injuries were sustained.
