Habeas Corpus is Cornerstone of Justice System

In a 3-0 ruling against a detainee at Guantanamo Prison, Bush and Regan era judges ruled that the government can keep secret information that the prisoner wants the public to hear.

Algerian Djamel Ameziane has been held at the offshore prison since 2002 and he is seeking his release. While the US military maintain that Ameziane was associated and trained with Taliban fighters, Ameziane maintains his innocence. He is seeking the release of any documents that would favour his release.

Ameziane has told his lawyer of incidents of torture, water torture and being pepper sprayed and left wet in front of an air conditioner.

"Ameziane told his lawyer that early in his confinement at Guantanamo Bay, guards at the base placed a water hose between his nose and mouth and ran it for several minutes. Ameziane said they repeated the procedure several times, nearly suffocating him."Associated Press

Tales of torture and possible murder have leaked out of the black prison situated in Cuba. Many of the inmates held at Guantanamo have been held on no or flimsy evidence. Child soldiers were also swept up in the early 80s and remained at the prison for many years. The most notable child soldier, Omar Khadr, has been held for eight years, since he was 15 years old.

Discussion about the effect of suspension of Habeas Corpus affects rights of all American citizens, not just those at Guantanamo prison.
