Food stalls at Durga puja venue attract huge crowd

Today is Mahalaya – the day when Goddess Durga, accompanied by her retinue of four children, is supposed to have left her abode in the Himalayas to journey to the home of her mother in Bengal. She is worshipped as Shakti, the personification of Women Power and she had annihilated the Demon King Asura. She is depicted with 10 hands – it implies that she is a multi-tasker. The Demon King Asura, on the other hand, is known to have the ability to change shapes – he is the evil power and like any evil, can take many forms. Mahalaya signifies that the actual Durga Pujas is only a week away and preparations for the festivities are at a peak. However, this year, the weather is playing spoilsport – the skies are overcast and occasional bouts of rains are proving to be real dampers.
