There are few Piers left around the UK. There are even less that are from the Victorian era of UK history. Hastings Pier was one that fell into this last category.
Since the early hours of this morning sadly this pier has been burning uncontrollably.
Hastings Pier closed in 2006 and has since been the subject of local people's efforts to fund renovation plans. The money raised was to provide the Pier with modern attractions and reopen it in the near future.
This now looks highly unlikely.
The fire started in what had been the ballroom. Despite early attendance by fire crews the blaze has proved difficult to eliminate.
The pier was designed by Eugenius Birch. It opened in 1872 and was originally 910ft long. It was magnificent in its heyday.
There are no casualties from the fire. As yet the cause of the blaze is unknown but police have arrested two people in the last few hours.
