A July trip to the Caribbean turned out to be much more then just a summer holiday for Kate Norley and John Oliver. Oliver told People on Saturday night at Comedy Central’s “Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Concert for Autism Education”, that while in St. Thomas, he decided to pop the question to Kate.
The couple met in 2008 at a Republican National Convention and have been together ever since. Kate is an Iraqi war veteran, and served as a combat medic in Iraq. She was inspired to join the military after the September 11 terror attacks. In order to make a difference, she served as a medic who specialised in mental health, counselling soldiers who were suffering from the trauma of war.
While talking about his proposal to Kate, Oliver jokingly added, “It’s the most emasculating thing I could possibly do to go out with someone who has actually done something valuable with their life.”
On a serious note, Kate stated, “We still have troops on the ground. No matter whether there are two or 200,000, we have to make sure our hearts and minds are with what they’re doing.”
The wedding date has not been finalised as yet, but the couple plans to wed “some time next year”.
