The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) issued a gun ban directive that took effect at 12 midnight of 25 September as part of security measures in lieu of the forthcoming barangay (village) and Sangguniang Kabataan (youth group) elections on 25 October.

The directive prohibits the bearing, carrying and transporting of firearms and on the employment of bodyguards.

The ban takes effect between 25 September and 10 November.

In a later development, two policemen assigned at the main headquarters of southern Philippines were arrested by authorities in Cotabato City Sunday afternoon in violation of the ban, the city police chief said on Monday.

Both will be charged for violation of COMELEC Resolution 9028 or the election gun ban.
