Malaysia and the other countries in ASEAN must strive to highlight the region's profile as an attractive enough to enhance trade and investment that is not overshadowed by the economy such as China and India.
When making this duggestion, Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak stressed that the Southeast Asian region capable of emerging as a viable area to offer economic opportunities to foreign markets including the United States.
Najib, who is also Finance Minister pointed out that at present no investment activities of the ASEAN countries with the U.S. is much greater when viewed in the context of a group, compared with countries of the world's investment in China or India.
''So it is important that as a country and region, we highlight the profile of the country and our region to new heights. If you do not do it, probably Malaysia and Southeast Asia will be submerged or overshadowed by other economic areas such as China and India.
''Many people are not aware that Malaysia and ASEAN, if viewed as a group, they constitute a major area of investment and the prospects for increased trade with the U.S., "he said in the presence of Malaysian students in the U.S. celebrated the Eid celebrations at the office of Vice Permanent Malaysia here today.
According to Najib, he mentioned the matter before the Malaysian students as important to them because they know it will be a major force that will move the country's economic future after graduation.
Accordingly, the Prime Minister told the ASEAN leaders meeting with President Barack Obama here today is significant and a major milestone in efforts to enhance ASEAN-US economic relations, including investment and exports to the U.S..
