Leaders of 10 member countries of Southeast Asia (ASEAN) yesterday held talks with President of the United States (U.S.) Barack Obama outside the General Assembly of the United Nations here.
US-ASEAN leaders meeting was jointly chaired by Obama as the host and Vietnam President, Nguyen Minh Triet, who is also chairman of ASEAN.
Two-hour meeting was held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue, attended by many heads of state of countries of Southeast Asia.
They include the Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the Prime Minister of Thailand, Abhisit Vejjajiva and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
New York summit was convened by Obama after his first meeting with ASEAN leaders in Singapore last year.
U.S. reportedly gives special emphasis to the region which is placed at the fifth-largest export market trading community.
Shortly after the summit, Malaysian Prime Minister held several meetings, including with U.S. Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke and the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales.
