London, United Kingdom - Andre Rieu cancelled his very first tour to the British Continent, the other tour dates for Ireland, New Zealand and Australia were also cancelled.
Last Monday his son Pierre Rieu announced: “We have cancelled all international concerts until the start of 2011, my father is too scared to go on stage.”
The Dutch Stehgeiger, born as André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu, became unwell last week during a shopping trip with his son Pierre. A long term virus infection in his inner ear causes dizziness and virtigo.
The king of the waltz Andre Rieu started his musical career in The Maastricht Chamber Orchestra (Maatrichts Salon Orkest) As the first violin, Rieu led them through the first two caranvalesque CD’s to a high popularity level. The Hieringe Biete CD’s appealed to a large audience. Rieu focused in on the waltz and especially the music by Johan Strauss.
Andre Rieu and his Strauss Orchestra has played all over the world. Rieu has made traditional classical music more accessible to a larger audience. His real solo success came with his CD’s Strauss & Co. Since then his Strauss Orchestra and his crew of 120 has toured the world.
The Rieu company suffers a large financial blow as all employees need to be paid a full salary.
Andre Rieu is at this moment at home in Maastricht.
