“Super Scarves” Program Reaches Milestone

With just over 500 days before game time, the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee has received its 1,000th scarf as part of the “Super Scarves” program. Super Scarves is a community-based initiative launched in January that encourages people to knit or crochet scarves that will be gifted to the estimated 8,000 volunteers during the Super Bowl in appreciation for their help.

Blue and white scarves have been coming in from across the country with crafters in 13 states from California to Maine currently represented. One Michigan City, Ind. resident has already returned 65 scarves to the Super Bowl Host Committee. Though Bev Meska has never had knitting or crocheting lessons, she has set a personal goal to make 100 scarves. “It’s exciting to engage the community in making scarves that the volunteers will get to keep,” she said. “Making these scarves is my way of being a part of the Super Bowl coming to Indianapolis.”

Tony Mason, senior vice president for the Host Committee, added, “The Super Scarves program is a creative way the Host Committee is getting volunteers involved now in the Super Bowl. Everyone’s participation underscores the great civic pride and spirit that is uniting us as we prepare to showcase our city and state to the world. The scarves are a fitting and appropriate gift to show the warmth we feel for our volunteers, made with admiration by individuals who have devoted their time and resources to this great program.”

The scarves may be knit or crocheted, must be made of specified blue and white yarn and may not include a team-specific design. Knitters and those crocheting are encouraged to return their scarves to the Host Committee as soon as they are complete so that the official Host Committee patch may be affixed. Those patches are being sewn on with support from individuals at the Indiana Women’s Prison.

Meska added, “I have 15 more scarves that I’ve recently completed so I need to get those returned soon to the Host Committee. That brings my total to 80!”
