Sometimes the Least Likely Thing Holds Answers

Cancer is now the leading cause of death worldwide. This year alone there will be an estimated 1,529,560 new cases diagnosed and unfortunately it will lead to 569,490 deaths according to the National Cancer Institute.

As cancer is on the rise, so are the numbers of Americans that seek out alternative treatments to certain types of cancer. The Journal of Oncology reported in one study that 88% of persons with cancer have tried at least one type of alternative treatment. There are many different alternatives out there ranging from energy medicine to Chinese medicine to the spiritual healing to the odd and unusual.

Since we mentioned the odd and unusual, well they may not be odd or unusual just probably the least likely sources you would consider to look at for a possible cancer cure. Who knows one or several of these down the road may actually provide a cure may be not to all cancers but just to one would provide a major impact on Americans and the battle of cancer.

Goji Berries (Wolf Berries)

They are found in China, Tibet and Mongolia. Currently available in dried or juice forms. They have been a part of Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The berries contain polysaccharides in which strengthen the bodies immune system. Amino acids to the count of nineteen have been found in these berries and have more Vitamin C than oranges can provide. They also contain carotenoids like beta-carotene and zeaxathin. Also contained is Vitamin B complex, Vitamin E, essential fatty acids and Betaine.

Various laboratory studies have advocated that the extract of these berries possibly can stop cancer cells from growing. A study that was published in the Chinese Journal of Oncology had discovered that 79 cancer patients had better response when the extract of these berries was added into their other therapies.

Essiac and Flo Essence

Are herbal tea mixtures developed from Burdock Root, Slippery Elm Inner Bark, Sheep Sorrel and Indian Rhubarb Root. It is sold all over the world as a tea or herbal dietary supplement. It was advertised in the 1920's as a cancer treatment. It is stated that the herbs cleans the blood while removing toxins. Laboratory, animal and human studies still have unclear evidence on its ability for anti-cancer outcomes. However, persons with cancer still use it as a treatment. It has not gained FDA approval as a cancer treatment.

Mistletoe Extract

Mistletoe extract is used throughout Germany in their clinics that specialize in complimentary approaches to cancer. A paper published in Germany (Ostermann 2009) analyzed 49 studies on outcomes of using the mistletoe drug Iscador and survival. The majority of the studies had shown positive effects.

The Mayo Clinic's director of Complimentary and Integrative medicine, Brent Bauer states that it can possibly slow or stop the growth of cancer. One study which had been published in 2001 issue of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine indicated that participants who had breast cancer had received the extract and had a mean survival rate of 4.79 years in comparison to those who did not and had mean survival rate of 2.41 years.

Raspberries

Raspberries contain a strong antioxidant ellagic acid that trigger activities of enzymes that detoxify carcinogens according to Dr. Gary Stoner, PhD, director of cancer chemo-prevention and etiology lab at Ohio State University, had done research with black berries. Their research had advocated that the mixture of preventive agents in the berries possibly are more effective to prevent cancer development. Dr Stoner states that the black berries are not 100% to stop tumors. So they are looking into another food to add with them that will boost chemo preventative activities on the berries alone.

Deep Water Sponges

Ocean sponges that come from shallow waters have been established to provide sources for conditions as cold sores, malaria and cancer.

There are numerous species of sponges in United Kingdom and Scotland deep waters. They contain complex chemicals that hold promise for new medications. The compounds that are extracted from these sponges are being used in trails for breast cancer and pancreatic cancer medications along with antiviral and antibiotics.

Sponge Magical Workings

In the 1950's sponges from the coast of Florida had compounds extracted in which had become the known herpes medicine Zovirax and it also produced Cytarbin medication which treats non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Discodermolide (deep sea sponge) was found in the waters off the Bahamas. In 1998 it had become licensed for development to treat lung and pancreatic cancer.

Japanese sponge Halichondria okadai displays potential as a treatment for melanoma and leukemia. Currently it is in pre-clinical trails.

The medication Eribulin is produced from sea sponge extract and has proved to be effective to fight breast cancer. In clinical trails the medication has also aided in treatment of other cancers which have included lung, sarcoma and prostate.

Chili Peppers

We have all heard of the wonders of capsaicin the active ingredient in the peppers. According to a study in Cancer Research, the compound had caused almost 80% of prostate cancer cells in mice to be eliminated. When capsaicin was used to treat prostate tumors were about one fifth in size in comparison to mice who were not treated. In the near future there is hope it may be in pill form and can aide in the prevention of cancer.

Blue Scorpion Serum

Blue scorpions which can only be located in Cuba have been used in clinical studies. Pre-clinical and clinical trails have both displayed that the serum is safe and tolerable. In trails with mice even being administered in high doses and no negative side effects were observed.

Blue Scorpion Serum Uses:

The serum using active ingredient Esozine™ had been tested for pain suppression. Several groupings of mice had received different amounts of the serum. One group had received the clinical painkiller Paracetamol. A control group was also used and did not receive anything. In comparison to control group the group receiving the painkiller had 47% less pain. The group who received the serum 55% less pain was shown.

In a study to suppress inflammation, three groups of mice were used. One group had received anti-inflammatory steroid Dexamet, usually given to cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy.

Control group had received nothing. The last group had received the serum. All the groups had inflammation which was artificially induced. In comparison to the control group, the serum group had 38% less inflammation. Further clinical studies are needed with higher doses than those used in the pre-clinical trail.

The serum has displayed the ability to stop cancer growth in the cell vitro. In a study four types of cancer cells from different cancers were placed in test tubes and given the serum. In the cancers that were used in this study the cancer cells had decreased when receiving the serum. One group had a decrease of 60% in just one week of treatment with serum.

In another study of five groups with cancerous tumors, with one group being the control group and having no treatment. The remaining four groups had received different amounts of the serum. Following a few weeks after the serum was administered the tumors had been assessed. The group receiving the highest dose had shown tumors reduced by 45%. This proves that the serum can stop the cancer cells from growing in living organisms.

Chaparral

Used by Native Americans for many years, it is an evergreen desert bush. Native Americans have used it to treat colds, cancers, wounds, bronchitis, warts and ringworm.

In the 1950's to 1970's Chaparral teas was used in the United States as an anti-cancer agent. Due to statements of the American Cancer Society there was no solid proof. The FDA would not allow it to be used due to the fact it can cause damage to liver and kidneys. There have been new studies that indicate the extract from the shrub is safe and does have a positive effect. Researchers had tested the extract from the shrub referred to as M4N. Eight patients who had tumors of advanced head and neck cancer had received the injections. Results had showed promise. Patients had no obvious problems with the injections and there was no evidence of serious liver or kidney damage. The study also showed some evidence that the extract had actually reduced the size of the tumors. Medical University of South Carolina have also shown this result.

Vitamin D

Research is now showing that Vitamin D may just have the ability to kill human cancer cells. JoEllen Welsh researcher at State University of New York in Albany, has spent 25 years studying the effects of Vitamin D.

A part of her research had taken breast cancer cells and treated them with a strong form of Vitamin D. In a couple of days the cells had just shriveled up and became eliminated. The vitamin has the same result as a medication for breast cancer treatment. Vitamin D penetrates the cells and activates the cell dying process.

The results were even stronger on breast cancer cells that were injected into mice. After several weeks the tumors had shrank on an average of about 50% and in some cases had totally been eliminated. Same results have occurred in mice with colon and prostate cancer.

There is still no immediate cure for cancer with Vitamin D and it has only been tested in mice. However, this does give hope for the future in cancer research.

It seems that just may be science has been looking into the wrong direction on treating cancer a lot of times. If things in which seem out of the ordinary like those of scorpions can provide a cure not only for cancer but other disease that can lead to death or become permanent conditions why not research the possibilities. Possibilities are endless and in science a lot of times error leads to the best discoveries to aide mankind.
