She had been suffering from lung disease. The singing diva of Palakkad, Kerala, began her singing career in 1983. She had worked with renowned music directors like Ilaiyaraaja, MM Sreelekha, KOTI and MM Keeravani, and sung several songs in different languages like Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, Badaga. Swarnalatha won the National Film Award for best female playback singer for the song Porale Ponnuthayi from the film Karuththamma (Composed by). She lent her voice in several hit songs like from the films Thalapathi, Thevar Magan, Karuththamma, Bombay, Indian, Minsaara Kanavu and many more. She was a versatile singer who sung melodious song like Maalayil Yaaro Manathodu Pesa and experimenting song like Mukkala Mukkabala.
