Lucena, Philippines – A helicopter with incumbent Quezon Provincial Governor Rafael Nantes on-board crashed in Lucena City Monday afternoon, resulting to death of at least five people, the provincial police chief said.
But Sr. Superintendent Erickson Velasquez would not confirm if the governor was among the fatalities , despite saying that the local official was among the passengers and there were no survivors in the crash.
In a phone interview, Velasquez said the chopper carrying three other people and Gov. Nantes departed from Quezon High School but crashed in Hael Subdivision, Bgy. Iyam at around 2:30 p.m.
“Unfortunately there were no survivors,” Velasquez said.
The fifth fatality was a civilian, police said.
Citing initial investigation, Velasquez said the helicopter rotor suddenly conked out in mid-air, leading to the crash.
Police are currently at the scene of the incident for retrieval operations, he said.
Nantes, a member of the Liberal Party (LP) ran for reelection in the May 10 polls, but lost to administration candidate David Suarez, son of reelected Quezon Representative Danilo Suarez.
