In an interview for the ‘Business Week’ magazine, the head of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, said that the second pilot on the plane is unnecessary cost for the operators. According to him, if necessary, the computer will bring the machine down. If in emergency e.g. pilot’s heart attack etc., trained stewardess’ will take control.
‘Let that computer control the flight’ - said O'Leary. He added that in the event of the incapacity of the first pilot, you just have to call with a bell stewardess, who takes over the helm. O'Leary assessed at the same time that conducting the airplane is much harder than the game.
O'Leary idea was sharply criticized by experienced pilots who have doubts on the president's concern about the safety of Ryanair's passengers. They ensure that the presence of the second pilot is often necessary even in the routine activities.
Media recall that O'Leary has recently suggested putting on board vending machines with coffee and bars, which would help to reduce the staff cost. His other ideas include charges for use of on-board toilet and standing space on the plane.
