James Lee, the man who was responsible for the hostage situation at the Discovery channel headquarters, was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, according to mental health experts.

The psychologists and psychiatrists who have suggested this diagnosis of James Lee have not directly treated him, but have gathered this from media reports and James Lee's missive.

Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, who is the chief of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, says that paranoid delusions and perceptions were evident from James Lee's written note. Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman claims that James Lee was clearly a schizophrenic.

Paranoid Schizophrenia, the mental disorder that is being associated to the case of James Lee, is a mental illness that causes delusions, auditory hallucinations, and paranoia. Almost 1 percent of the population suffers from this illness.

James Lee is suspected to be suffering from this illness, which convinced him to take such drastic actions.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. The person finds it difficult to tell the difference between real and imagined experiences, to think logically, to express feelings, or to behave appropriately. In Paranoid Schizophrenia the individual is preoccupied with one or more delusions or many auditory hallucinations but does not have symptoms of disorganized schizophrenia. Whereas in Disorganized schizophrenia, prominent symptoms are disorganized speech and behavior, as well as flat or inappropriate affect. The person does not have enough symptoms to be characterized as catatonic schizophrenic.
