Iraq to buy over 13 billion in US military equipment.

A US convoy of the 1st sustainment brigade prepares to go to Iraq to bring back heavy military equipment

There will be huge order of tanks, ships, and hardware. U.S. officials say this shows that Iraqi-U.S. military ties will be close for years to come. The officials might add that the relations between Iraq and the U.S. military industrial complex will be tight for years to come. However, it is quite possible that if a new Iraqi government ever gets up and running they may decide to diversify their source of supply. One wonders what the priorities for reconstruction are given that even a large city such as Baghdad has at best an intermittent power supply. No doubt this sale is part of the new page in U.S. Iraq relationships.

"It helps to build their capabilities, first and foremost; and second, it builds our strategic relationship for the future," said Army Lt. Gen. Michael Barbero, the ranking U.S. officer responsible for training and advising Iraq forces.

Military sales, which often include lengthy maintenance and training contracts, are part of U.S. efforts to maintain a relationship with Iraq. These sales will rank Iraq one of the biggest customers for U.S. military arms and equipment. The Iraqi air force has to be built from the ground up but is not part of the 13 billion dollar purchase

The Iraqis have requested 18 F-16 Falcon fighter jets as part of a further $3 billion program that also includes aircraft training and maintenance. If approved by Congress, the first aircraft could arrive in spring 2013. Under the plan, the first 10 pilots would be trained in the U.S.

No doubt the U.S. is hoping to arm Iraq as a means of offsetting the regional power of Iran even though any new government is likely to be dominated by Shia politicians who will want good relationships with Iran. There is no Saddam Hussein to support any longer as the U.S. did in the war between Iran and Iraq. By turfing out Hussein and bringing a form of majority rule in Iraq the U.S. has almost certainly ensured a greater role for Iran in Iraqi governance.

Why am I not surprised with this announcement? It is "business as usual" for ye olde Industrial-Military Complex. US munitions makers laughing all the way to the bank. Jeez.. it only cost over 5,000 US lives and untold numbers of Iraqis to procure the "deal"! The ultimate payoff for pre-emptive actions?

Pre-emptive actions prepare the way for pro-active arms marketing!

I am having mixed feelings about this. Andy is right about the cost in human lives, which makes this difficult to absorb. On the other hand, exporting supports U.S. economics by maintaining jobs and might create new ones.

I just wish that partnering with other countries did not have to include the war machine. The value in creating good relationships can be in infrastructure development to deliver clean water and power to Iraqi citizens, as well as health, education, and agriculture. To me these are sustainable developments and growth industries that can make Iraq an independent country.

I am tending to agree with Dava castillo here but I will go with the up side if it means jobs for americans who are out of work and are suffering because of that unneccesary war in the first place then the billions should be put back in the US economy for the people one way or another.
