After four long months of trauma, Pete Bethune has finally returned to his home in Auckland. The New Zealander, Pete Bethune was taken back to Japan after confronting with the Japanese whaling vessel called Shonan Maru #2. Although, Pete Bethune knew that the act will cost him, he didn't care at all.
After spending four crucial months in prison in Japan and spending half a million dollars in legal fees, Pete Bethune was greeted by his wife, Sharyn, and their two daughters, Danielle, 15, and Alycia, 13, in New Zealand. When he saw his family at airport, Pete Bethune eyes were filled with tears.
Initially, Pete Bethune was sentenced for 2 years in Japanese prison for the involvement in direct clashes with Japanese whalers. However, the sentence was suspended after four months. The attempt of Pete Bethune was to invoke the realization in the government that whaling should be stopped.
In his press conference, Pete Bethune clearly stated that he doesn't feel regretted at all for what he did in the Antarctic waters.
