The story so far;
NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Mission [MER] is an ongoing robotic space mission involving two rovers Spirit and Opportunity exploring the planet Mars. It began with the sending of the two rovers to explore the Martian surface and geology. The mission’s scientific objective was to search for and characterize wide range of rocks and soils that holds clue to past water activity in Mars.
Contest with a prize tag $1.5 million;
NASA is gearing up a challenge for space minded engineers to design a solar powered night rover to explore other worlds. According to NASA the new rovers must function at high level during the night and day unlike the solar powered exploration vehicles being used on Mars which works only during the day and they perform night tasks once or twice a month. The prize tag for the competition is $ 1.5 million and is open to private companies, student teams and independent investors. It is one of the NASA’s three additions to Centennial Challenges Competition to spur innovation and interest in space technology and exploration.
