Today 51 years ago, on August 21, l959, church bells rung throughout Honolulu, the Kingdom of Hawaii and later Republic of Hawaii was admitted to the Union as its 50th state by the passing of the Hawaii Admission Act which President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law.

From July 7, 1898 until August 21, l959, the Territory of Hawaii was a United States territory by virtue of the Newlands Resolution passed by U.S. Congress.

In l898 under McKinley’s policy, America was fighting against Spain in Cuba, Philippines and Puerto Rico. The strategic location for warfare in the Philippines made Hawaii especially important to American interests.
