Batangas Province lies along the southwestern edge of Luzon Island, Philippines with a land area of 3,165.81 sq. km. and a population of more than 2.2 Million as of 2007. The province has 492 km. of coastline, comprising of Batangas Bay, Balayan Bay, Tayabas Bay and other adjacent bays dotted with beach resorts and recreational facilities. The Verde Island Passage has been dubbed as the "centre of the centre" of the world's marine biodiversity in a study by America's Smithsonian Institute. The world's largest concentration of marine life in a 10-km by 10-km area is found in Verde Island Passage corridor located between Batangas and Mindoro,
In addition, "Taal Lake and Volcano" is in Batangas Province. It is called the smallest active volcano. The volcano is surrounded by a lake; but the volcano itself has a small crater lake. It is a lake within a volcano within a lake.
With all the marine biodiversity and environmental protection needs of Batangas - it is also host to several industries because of its deep bays and shorelines. It is host to the Batangas International Ship and Cargo Port, and many other private ports. It is an administration nightmare - keeping peace between the marine biologists and environmentalists and the dive sites and resort owners situated in Tayabas and Balayan Bay and balancing this with the needs of the industries and shippers in Batangas Bay.
Batangas is famous for: Barako Coffee, Balisong Fan Knives, Bulalo Beef Stew, Taal Tapa and Longganisa Pork Sausages, Barong Tagalog Embroidered Garments and Tablecloths, Bagoong Balayan, Bee Honey and Vinegar from Honey, Handmade Paper, "Tawilis and Maliputo" Fish from Taal Lake, Tamarind Wine and Tamarind Sweets, Lambanog Wine and Spirits among others.
