BJPs allegations unfortunate: Panda

The BJD MPs on Wednesday staged a demonstration near the Gandhi statue in the Parliament premises to protest the environmental clearance given to Polavaram project which would divert over 3,000 hectares of forest land for the construction of the Indira Sagar (Polavaram) multi-purpose project.

The parliamentarians alleged that the double standards adopted by Ministry of Environment and Forests have been exposed. The ministry has permitted eco nod to the project within a fortnight without considering Orissa’s concerns.

“It is an absurd concept and we are opposed to it. We will fight against it and won’t allow them to take even an inch of our land,” BJD MP Pyarimohan Mohapatra said.

“The same rules which are being used to block projects in Orissa are being used to give clearances across the border which is going to submerge many parts of Orissa. So this double standard is what we are opposing,” BJD MP Baijayant Panda said.

On the other hand, Congress MP Bhakta Das has rebuffed the allegations leveled by BJD MPs. The state government should not politicize the issue rather it should hold talks with Andhra Pradesh government to resolve the issue, he said.

The Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh in a letter to MP Arjun Sethi said, the allegations are baseless and false. The clearance was given in a condition that no submergence of land would be allowed in adjacent Orissa and Chhatisgarh.
