Detroit, MI- A caller in Detroit spoke with channel 4’s news reporter, Karen Drew venting her frustrations on how she needed a ambulance for her 84 year-old aunt, and was told “if the Aunt’s condition worsened call back.” The reason given, “ There are not any available units.”
Detroit has been under the media microscope for it’s lack of commitment to it’s residents and visitors, if they need EMS. With the lack of workers, some present Emt’s and Paramedic’s are responding to calls that have holding sometimes up to an hour.
The woman caller stated that her aunt has a history of cardiac problems and at the time of the call she was having severe chest pains.
The mayor of Detroit, Dave Bing and Fire Commissioner, James Mack ,Cheryl Campbell, Gerald James, and Joe Wilson isn’t addressing the problem according to the oath to “protect the citizens” when they took office.
Michigan State representative, Rasheeda Talib said “ EMS should be it’s own division., “ instead Detroit EMS is a division under the fire department. How shameful it must have been even injured firemen, couldn’t have the EMS services they needed in an emergency. When the firemen were injured while fighting a multiple alarm fire they too were told ,
“ There were not any units available.”
The police transported some of the injured firemen. Spokesman and President of the EMS union, Wisam Zeineh said that EMS is a major contributor of the fire departments revenue, about 80% of EMS revenue goes towards the fire department.” So why is it, reportedly EMS has 45 units in the fleet but only about 20 are actively working?
