A Colombian passenger plane operated by Aires, crashed while landing on the island of San Andres, Monday (08/16/2010), during the storm.
As a result, 114 passengers injured, while one person died of a heart attack. Boeing 737 carrying 121 passengers and six crew members arrived at the Caribbean resort island when its fell before reaching the runway. Thunderstorms and strong winds were reported at the time.
"The planes came from Bogota was attempting to land in the middle of a great electrical storm," said Colonel Gustavo Barrero of the Colombian Air Force, told reporters.
The wounded victims was taken to a local hospital. "The captain of the aircraft (the pilot) told us that the plane was attacked by lightning. We are examining the wreckage to try to determine what damage and what happened to cause the accident," said Donald Tascon, deputy director of Colombia's aviation agency.
The fuselage broke into three parts. The island airport was closed to facilitate the investigation. Medical officer at the scene told the newspaper El Tiempo that the passenger named Amar Fernandez de Barretos had a heart attack shortly after the accident and died on the way to the hospital.
