The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is expected to approve Manila Electric Company's (Meralco) entry as the newest member of the country's premier professional league, taking over the old Sta. Lucia franchise.
Apparently, Meralco has already submitted all the documentary requirements and there appears no remaining hindrance to finalize its participation in Asia’s first professional basketball league.
On the other hand, Purefoods, one of the oldest and most storied teams in the league, is said to be leaving PBA. This apparently developed as a result of the company’s recent change of ownerhip. The new owners are allegedly not interested in fielding a professional basketball team.
The obvious question in many PBA fans’ minds now is, “What will happen to the team’s cagers and management staff?”
It is widely believed that San Miguel Corporation (SMC), which owns Purefoods' PBA franchise, will keep its third team in the pro league carrying a different brand.
