Mother Earth: Our Environment
By Prof. Liwayway .Memije-Cruz
If you have faith like a grain of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, move from here to that place, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible to you.
Mother Earth is truly sending us signals on the present state of the environment. The typhoons, flash floods, forest fires, earthquakes, eruptions , tsunamis, hurricanes, species dying, rivers choked with pollution, ozone depletion, climate change, dying forests, decimated coral reefs and conversion of agricultural lands into salt pans and deserts.
Undoubtedly, we could easily rationalize that the suffering of Mother Earth is because of what we call progress. We have to admit that we are indeed the culprits. Putting together crisis, abuse and neglect bring out the urgent need for us to do something about these alarming issues. Shall we still allow a massive cleansing to remind all of us that wehave been poor custodians of Mother Earth?
Most of us are fully knowledgeable of the urgency to preserve Mother Earth through wise decisions. Considerations should be on the concept of sustainability. Exploiting our natural resources has to be considered in terms of long-term effects. Careful justifications should be done in creating jobs or putting up projects that might cause environmental damage. We are all indeed parts of the entire environment and whatever actions we do would in turn affect other people, our planet and the universe as a whole. Technological advances should be within a framework of responsibility of the present and future generations or simply within a view of sustainable development.
Predictions and prophecies have warned us of impending circumstances if we do not do something about saving Mother Earth. WE are not separate from it and according to Chief Seattle:
What ever befalls the earth?
Befalls the sons and daughters of the earth…
We did not weave the web of life;
We are merely a strand in it.
Whatever we do to the web,
we do to ourselves.
