The seasonal influenza vaccine guards against three types of influenza. These include the 2009 H1N1 influence virus that had spread extensively. The 2009 H1N1 virus had arrived last year after the development started on the seasonal vaccine. Two different types of vaccines had to be used to guard against the seasonal flu and 2009 H1N1 flu virus however, now for this year we seem to only need one.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just released it has just given approval to vaccines for the 2010 – 2011 influenza season in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) affirm that between five and twenty percent of the United States populace acquires influenza every year. This contributes to greater than 200,000 hospitalization due to related problems and it causes about 36,000 deaths.

According to Dr. Karen Midthum, the acting director of FDA's Center for Biologicals Evaluation and Research, states the foremost way to safeguard yourself and your family from influenza is to receive the vaccine every year. The attainability of a new influenza vaccine each year is a vital means to prevent influenza and deaths.

It is also essential part that health care practitioners aide in advocating influenza vaccines for their patients, the vaccine is also essential to health care practitioners in order to safeguard themselves, their patients and their families along with their community. The FDA advises health care organizations to reinforce their members to get the vaccine.

This coming years manufactures and brand names are as follows:

Afluria, CSL Limited; Agriflu, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics; Fluarix, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals; FluLaval, ID Biomedical Corporation; FluMist, MedImmune Vaccines Inc.; Fluvirin, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited; and Fluzone and Fluzone High-Dose, Sanofi Pasteur Inc.

Each year specialists from the FDA, World Health Organization, CDC, among other facilities examine virus samples and their patterns. These are gathered throughout the world in order to classify strains which are possibly the ones to create the greatest illness for the upcoming season.

Dependent upon the information and the guidance of the FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, manufactures incorporate the relevant three strains contained in the 2010 – 2011 vaccines. The proximate equivalent between the current strains along with the strains in the vaccines the greater the safeguard against influenza disease.

Seasonal influenza vaccines have a proven track record for safety and efficiency in the United States.

One vaccine, CSL Limited's Afluria has under went changes for labeling this season, in order for health care practitioners to be aware about additional occurrences of fever and febrile seizures, sudden onset of seizures in young children generally younger than five years old, after getting the 2010 Southern Hemisphere formulation of CSL's influenza vaccine. Influenza season in the Southern Hemisphere starts prior the the Northern Hemisphere. CSL Limited will not be distributing the United States with the 0.25 milliliter single dose, prefilled syringes, which are applied in very young children. Also, the 0.5 milliliter single dose, prefilled syringes and the 5 milliliter multi dose vials will be supplied.

The FDA is requesting CSL Limited to execute a study Afluria in children to collect added information pertaining to the febrile occurrences that were seen in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention have now published suggestions for the annual flu vaccination which includes all persons ages six months and older. This broadened suggestion will take effect in the 2010-2011 influenza season. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), who advises the CDC on issues on vaccines, had voted on this recommendation on February 24, 2010, Atlanta meeting. Previous suggestions for seasonal influenza vaccination had centered on the vaccination of persons at greater risks for problems from influenza which are not limited to persons who have underlying health conditions, children from six months to eighteen years old, and close contacts of increased risk persons among others.

Seasonal influenza is basically a flu and referred to as such. It infects the respiratory tract such as throat and lungs. Unlike common colds the flu can produce severe illness and life threatening problems. The recommended way to avoid influenza is to get the yearly vaccines. Influenza is classified as a respiratory illness.

Signs of the flu:

Fever, feeling as if you have a fever and/or chills
Cough
Sore Throat
Runny Nose
Muscle and body aches
Headaches
Tiredness
You can also have vomiting, diarrhea however, this usually happens mostly in children.

In the United States the flu season usually happens late November through the month of March. It is simply spread from persons coughing and sneezing. The droplets that occur can actually on average project up to three feet through the air and get deposited on the nose or mouth of a person who is nearby. It can also be spread when someone touches the droplets on another person or object and then they touch or nose (even touching someone else's nose or mouth) before hand washing.

If you have had the influenza one year you do build up some immunity to closely related viruses for one or more years in persistence.

The flu can cause some problems such as bacterial pneumonia, dehydration and making chronic medical conditions worse such as asthma. Children can get sinus infections or ear infections. Since the flu is so closely related to symptoms of other bacterial causes of respiratory illness there is a test available which your health practitioner can do. Also a health exam could be needed to see if there are any other problems or infections from the influenza. If you are exposed symptoms present themselves within one to four days with two days being the average time.

If you did not receive the vaccine and get the flu there are antiviral medications available (pills, liquid and inhaled).

There are some persons that do prefer alternative treatments when they become ill. Influenza is one of the conditions/illnesses that many persons use alternative medicine to treat the flu.

There are several alternative therapies that just can possibly help you to fight off the flu, recover from it and help prevent it. Below are common ones most used.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs

Chinese herbs such as Huang Qi help strengthen the Qi and boost your bodies immune system. Ban Lan Gen is used as a anti virus for the flu especially in China.

Acupuncture can re-balance your energy along with stimulating your immune system. There have been a few studies which indicate that acupuncture and Chinese medicine decrease the risk of upper respiratory tract infections and decreases the time in which you are ill.

Chiropractic

There has been many reports established that being adjusted my your chiropractor during flu season is actually beneficial to your health.

The virus strain known as H1N1 was also responsible for the great flu epidemic in 1918. It was one of the greatest overwhelming outbreaks in world history. Over 650,000 persons in the United States had died from it.

Statistics show that in Davenport Iowa medical practitioners had treated 4,953 cases and had a death toll of 247. In the same exact city 150 chiropractors which also included students and faculty of the Palmer School of Chiropractic had treated 1,635 cases and had a death toll of only one person.

Overall in the state of Iowa (excluding Davenport) medical practitioners treated 93,590 patients and had 6,616 deaths. That makes a loss ratio of one out of 15 patients. Chiropractors had treated 4,735 patients and lost six patients. Their ratio one patient out of 859 patients.

One of the highest statistics that had occurred came from Oklahoma. In which medical practitioners were advocating chiropractic care. Chiropractors had treated 233 cases that were deemed by medical practitioners to be beyond any hope of recovery. Chiropractors had treated those cases and only had a death incident of 25 patients.

During the same major epidemic New York City authorities had displayed evidence that persons who had chiropractic care only 25 patients out of every 10,000 cases had died and only 100 of phenomena had died out of every 10,000 cases.

Chiropractic adjustments have a major effect during the flu. Upon adjustments you have a lessened sustained sympathetic tone in your nervous system which then leads to heightened immune functioning, among other things.

Immune functioning is vital for things ranging from a cold to influenza and cancer. If your immune system is stimulated it can then in turn fight any illnesses which occur in your body.

I think the flu vaccine is great! I have always had the flu every year until I been getting the flu shots.
I thank that the benefits out weigh the side effects at least in my case.
