Writing is an amazing past time activity and one would even be able to have a full time income if he or she can be consistent in his/her work. So the answer is; “yes there is money in online writing,” The following article will take you step by step through the process on how to get started.
Your online income
No one will be a millionaire in his first month of his online writing career, Your online publishers, pay pennies, cents and dollars, mainly based on performance of your articles measured by Page Views PV’s. So an income as an online writer is build up gradually, your skills improve, the number of articles published increases and so does your income. You have to be realistic, many great writers had a job while they wrote their first novel, and wrote in their spare time, the passion driving them. Online writing is different, the passion of creating your income should drive you, but more about that later.
Write about subjects that interest you, and that could be really anything. However your articles will perform better when there is valid information for the reader. Online surfers are seeking information, always keep this in mind when writing anything for your online venture. Be creative, most publishers only require a minimum of 400 words per article. Split articles up and make a series.
Often new writers have problems to find subjects. Open up any newspaper, magazine or the TV and the subjects are jumping at you. Make a list of items that you would liken to write about, and start researching.
What you lack in skills you have to make up in numbers. This means, if you are a weathered writer and you have good SEO skills your online articles will have high PV, and your overall performance will be better then someone who is lacking these skills However, that new person might be full of fire and energy, submitting 3-5 articles daily, which in the end will result in more PV’s per month overall, earning him more dollars than the very skilled online author. Does that make sense? Note: - quality is important, no short cuts allowed.
Where to publish?
The internet is a huge community with billions of webpages and blobs. Depending on your spoken language you will have to research for online publishers in your country. When you are writing in English then there are some wonderful websites to be found. Bukisa, Allvoices, Associated Content, Constant Content, Suite 101 and are just a few platforms where you will be paid for genuine materials. Research which website will suit your needs.
Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement
Search engines becoming more and more sophisticated, if you steel from other writers you will be found, and your publisher will ban you from their program with loss of all earnings and future earnings. Stay true to yourself, be creative. That will make you a true author.
SEO – Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine Optimization is the key of the internet.
Tip – Learn everything there is to learn about SEO, www.google.com offers some great reading materials on their Adwords website. Another recommendation would be to read Perry Marshall’s Tip 2 – Ultimate guide to Google Adwords – Perry Marshall – awesome book to learn how search really works
Consistency is the key to your success, if you submit an article every week your business will grow steadily, if you submit an article every day, your business will make rapid progress, if you submit 3 articles per day your business will explode. But in your plan you have to do what you can do everyday. For yourself, under promise and over deliver.
There are many writing tools on the market, ranging from free downloads to programs well in the thousands of dollars. In the end, a tool is a tool, and if you not first acquire the basic skills then you will have to rely on your tools forever. Best is to learn to write and learn the basics of SEM and SEO, and in the meantime research if there is a tool that can assist you. The best tool I have found is pen and paper, to take notes wherever I can. Nowadays a digital camera is also a great tool to prompt your ideas.
Make a Plan
The saying goes “when you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Writing is like fishing, when you fish here and there and nothing bites, the discouragement will soon arrive. However when you learn the trade, learn to fish, and be consistent, your skills will improve fast. Your net will grow faster, and your income will become steady and will increase month after month.
Set some goals
If you see writing as a hobby then you will create a hobby income, however if you see online writing as your business, your income, then you need to make a goals/earnings plan. In every business quarterly plans are made, set up a 90 day plan, and stay with that plan for at least this period, allow yourself to do more but not to do less during this period. This is what we call sawing the seeds, only then you would be able to harvest. After your first 90 days you could adjust your plan for your next 90 days. Monitor your progress, articles published per day, PV’s per day, income made per day. Only by closely monitoring your results will be visible. That will excite you. Because you know that your results are on track.
Happy writing, and welcome to a growing industry.
