Melaka was founded around 1400 by a prince from neighboring Sumatra named Parameswara. He was inviting to traders from all around the region, many battles have been fought over this piece of prosperous territory.
Transport to and from this harbor has always been an important route in Malaysia, however Malaysia because of its relative shallow waters was never able to become a main merchant harbor in the industrialized world
Reaching Melaka By Sea
There are no ferries from Melaka to any major ports. Just south of Melaka at the jetty of Tanjung Batu you will find transport to Pulau Besar (The Great Island).
Coming To Melaka By Air
Melaka has its own International Airport Batu Berendam Airport just North of the city center and it serves mainly local flights. Melaka is strategically located close to Malaysia’s busiest airports KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) and LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) which are located only 80 kilometers from Melaka city and both serve for excellent international transport to Melaka.
Traveling To Melaka By Road
The main North South Route between Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Singapore, the E2, passes Melaka city within 20 kilometer. Main exit to Melaka is exit Ayer Keroh, however you can also exit at Jasin or Simpang Ampat.
Trains To Melaka
KTM or Malaysian Railway does not have a station in Melaka city, the closest train station is Tampin which is about 40 kilometers North of Melaka city.
Visiting Melaka By Bus
Melaka’s main bus terminal, Melaka Sentral, provides services to almost all main cities on the Malaysia Peninsular. The air conditioned coaches are a comfortable inexpensive and easy way to travel.
Local bus transport
local busses can transport you all around the Melaka area. For connections with cities further away, better use the Melaka Sentral station.
Traditional Trishaws
These three-wheeled colorful vehicles are a real novelty in Malaysia. Trishaws are bicyle rickshaws. Trishaws allow visitors to enjoy the sights of Melaka at a leisurely pace. The drivers allow you to stop at any point to take some pictures or buy souvenirs. Standard fares are unknown, you better agree on the price before you get in the trishaw.
Taxis And Limousines
Are readily available, best to agree on a price before you get in your cab. Taxis are fairly inexpensive.
Rental Cars
Are readily available and are a great way to explore other parts of the State Melaka and beyond, book through a local travel agent or at the local airport.
Rental Vehicles
Bicycles and motor bikes are available for day by day rental, many of the local hostels and or motor bike shops have various models on offer.
Safety notes:
* Seat belts are mandatory in Malaysia
** Police road blocks can be held at surprising places
*** Only international driver’s licenses are accepted
Melaka with all its history will charm you, and you will find many different ways to move around this beautiful piece of preserved Malaysian heritage.
