Mexican Police have found at least 51 bodies in a mass grave outside of Monterrey, Mexico.
Reuters reports that police acted on a tip from an informant and started digging up a rural area 12 miles east of Monterrey. Dozens of corpses have been found, some burned beyond recognistion others riddled with bullets.
The State Governor of Nuevo Leon, Rodrigo Medina the state in which Monterrey is located said,
"Investigators believe these could be people related to organized crime, a product of war between these cartels," Governor Rodrigo Medina told reporters. "This is the level of violence we expect when these groups clash."
Many of the victims in the mass graves are believed to have died within the last two weeks.
Since Phillip Calderon too office and declared war on the Cartel, about 25,000 people have been killed throughout Mexico.
The violence throughout Mexico has become a major concern for U.S. Government and border state Governors. In some areas close to the border the crime wave has been felt. Juarez bordering El Paso has an extremely high crime rate. Recently U.S. Embassy workers were asassinated in their vehicle.
Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona have been experiencing similar crime waves with kidnappings and human smuggling spilling across the border.
Monterrey was ranked as the most secure city in Latin America and Mexico in 2005, and one of the two most secure in 2006. However, the city has experienced violence related to turf battles between warring drug cartels in Mexico. Right now Monterrey is suffering from a huge security crisis. The year 2010 has been the most violent in history. Drug dealers are a major concern however military offensives and police captures of important drug cartel chiefs have weakened drug cartels trying to settle in the city. The City is realtively safe to travel at day and night, however precaution and common-sense should be taken in certain districts at night.
Obviously things have changed considerably since 2006.
This is such a serious problem that world markets are even starting to get affected by it.
