17-year old Steven Ortiz from Glendora, California started with an old cell phone and ended up with a Porsche through online trading on the Craigslist website. The teen boy made 14 online trades over a two year period and eventually traded up to get a 2000 Porsche Boxster.
Ortiz started with an old cell phone, which he traded for a better model and then traded for an i-Pod touch. He did research and searched for great bargains, and then he kept trading up, acquiring dirt bikes, a MacBook Pro, a 1987 Toyota 4Runner, and eventually a 1975 Ford Bronco which is considered a collectible. The value of the Ford gave him the power to trade for a 2000 Porsche Boxster.
"I get so many people who say, `Can you trade my phone for a car?' I just say, `Yeah. It's not that easy,"' he told reporters.
Ortiz's father says in a struggling economy people are willing to trade nice possessions for things they actually need but are struggling to afford. Steven says he is already looking for a new car because Porsche maintenance is too expensive.
