It all started with the following tweet:
I didn’t know the Scientologists had a church on Tottenham Court Road. Just hurried past in case the stupid rubs off.
This tweet came from the twitter feed of John Dixon, a councillor on Cardiff City Council during a trip to London. This morning, WalesOnline.co.uk reported (here) that the Ombudsman determined that the tweet was likely to have broken the Councils code of conduct and referred the matter to the Standards and Ethics committee.
The outcome of their investigation remains to be seen but this morning, David Allen Green, who tweets as @jackofkent, posted the story and encouraged his followers to retweet the original message that got John Dixon into trouble.
This has lead to thousands of tweets, either supporting the councillor or posting other links criticising the Church of Scientology.
Many of the posters almost seem to be goading the Scientologists to sue them, for example:
Has anyone written a kickarse song about scientology? Maybe that's next. I need me a lawsuit.
As of this moment, there don't appear to be any pro-Scientologists getting involved and WalesOnline reported that the Church of Scientology has not commented on the situation regarding John Dixon.
Postscript: John Dixon appeared on Newsnight on the day of this story, see the video and read about it here.
