The Zephyr wieghs just 50 kg and can be launched by five people! Although built in the UK it took off from US Army proving ground in Yuma last Friday. It is still in the air and is expected to stay aloft for two weeks. It has already been up five times longer than the official record recognized by the world air sports federation
The plane has been developed by the defence and research company Qinetiq. The planes are expected to have many military and civilian applications in the future. Unlike satellites they can stay over a location for some time and unlike traditional UAV's they do not need refuelling. The solar powered batteries drive propellers and also store enough power to keep them aloft overnight.
The plane is 50 per cent larger than its predecessor and has a wing span of 22.5 meters.
