Police stated today that they have a suspect in custody for Sunday night's attempted sexual assualt in the Morgan Park neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota.
"A combination of the public's assistance, along with the diligent follow through by patrol officers and investigators resulted with an arrest," said Deputy Chief Robin Roeser.
Early Thursday morning, a 29 year old man was arrested from his Morgan Park home. Police have found out that the incident occurred on the railroad tracks near the St. Louis River - just south of Lake Superior.
The suspect, just released as Levi Derek Haase, was walking along the tracks when he spotted a woman, alone, and then tried to assualt her.
The woman stated that Hasse grabbed her from behind, and told her he wanted to have sex with her. Hasse threw her to the ground and started choking her, police stated. She was able to talk him out of assaulting her further than putting his hands underneath her clothing and touching her.
The woman told police that Hasse identified himself as "Jason" and that he wanted her to be his girlfriend. Hasse left the scene shortly after apologizing to the woman and forcing her to kiss him and to exchange contact information. After the woman was alone, she ran for help.
Roeser stated, "We took this case very seriously from the beginning. The suspect victimized the entire community, by creating fear. We dedicated many resources to this," he added.
Police later stated that it was a random attack, and the two had not known each other previously to it.
During the court case, it was revealed that Hasse has a juvenille record that also included some sexual related crimes. Prosecutor Mark Rubin asked for a high bail, saying that Haase is a risk to public safety. Haase's attorney countered that, and said he doesn't believe his client is a threat.
Bail was eventually ordered at the prosecutor's request, $125,000.00, by judge John DeSanto.
