Malaysia is a country of diverse cultures, faiths and traditions. Comes with it too, is a melting pot of culinary adventure and experience. Food is very much a Malaysian way of life, so to speak. Enter any typical Malaysian homes, the first word one would be greeted is "awak sudah makan", simple means "have you eaten".!
This column, will give you samples of some of those experiences that are so common in Malaysia yet something unique to the rest of the world. For a start we begin in Penang, a former straits settlement colony, has now transformed into a blend of culture, colours and foor paradise. Other than a typical Malay, Chinese, Indian or Western cooking, the Peranakans is a unique culture by itself.
We dont want to call it half breed, but its a community formed long time ago when the Chinese marry local Malays and they established a truly excellent combination and assimilation of culture and tradition. Their daily food too have evolved to a unique blend of Malay spiciness with Chinese simplicity, to a rather extraordinary taste.
Assam Laksa is one such dishes. Sour and pungent fish soup poured over rice noodle with cut vegetables, top with "hei koh" is truly to shout about. Another is its "Passembor", wet Poppiah or Spring roll. Nasi ulam or bee hoon kerabu simply out of this world. So are its Gulai Fish, Ayam Pong...just to name a few. You will ask for more.
