Female infanticide is prevalent in many parts of rural India An official report says that Bihar has 921 females for every 1000 males and the gender ratio is more alarming in other Indian states. At a time when gender ratio and environmental imbalances are of global concern Dharhara a small village in Bihar has encouraged the villagers to plant at least 10 fruit bearing trees to celebrate the birth of every girl child, the children are treated as avatars of Goddess Lakshmi. This village is nesteled in midst of 20,000 fruit bearing trees. Trees planted at the time of their birth grow side by side along with the girls and in turn mature when the girls are ready for marriage they earn them enough money by the way of fruits and wood to get a groom of the family’s dream. The chief minister Mr.Nitish Kumar has praised the villagers for their efforts.
