A family of 3 is still alive after a fire, thanks to their pit bull, named Thor.
About 3am, Thursday morning a family was asleep including a three month old baby.
Kemper Hunter and Sarah Laughlin were asleep on the couch bed when the fire started. They did not wake up as Thor barked and even bit the owner to try to wake them up.
He kept barking until finally they woke up and realized that the fire was roaring through their home.
The most amazing part is that Thor took the baby to the front door! By that time the home was engulfed in flames and they would not have survived a moment longer.
"He had my infant, my 3-month-old little girl, bassinet and all, grabbed by the ruffles and drug to the front door, ready to go. He's a hero, he saved our lives,” said Hunter.
The baby in the bassinet was in the bedroom and not even close to where the couple was asleep. This dog is truly a hero. They wouldn't have had time to get the baby, had Thor not intervened.
The Red Cross has provided a hotel room for them to stay at for a few days.
They had just moved in a week prior and they did not have rental insurance, so they have lost everything they owned.
They are just extremely grateful to be alive and give credit to Thor.
"Thank God for him, because if it wasn't for him, everything else is replaceable, but if it wasn't for him I think we'd still be laying in that bed if my dog hadn't been as heroic as he was,” Hunter said.
The Red Cross of Elkhart County has set up a fund to help them. Please call the Red Cross at 574-293-6519 if you’d like to help.
