Somali Pirates Takes Control of Tanker

According to EU Naval Force Somalia, pirates attacked the MT Motivator, a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, in the northern Bab-Al-Mandeb (a strait between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa) last Sunday. According to the report, “After notification of this attack, attempts were made to make contact with the Motivator but to no avail. The hijack was confirmed early on 5 July.” 18 Filipinos were part of the hostages. The Department of Foreign Affairs received word of the incident from the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi. DFA Spokesperson Ed Malaya said through text message, “The DFA is coordinating with the ship’s principal and naval authorities in the region on measures to ensure the safety and security of the seafarers." The recent hijacking leaves a total of 81 Filipinos held by pirates. 18 in the MT Motivator, 3 on FV Tai Yuan 227, 19 on the MV Eleni P, 1 on the MV Iceberg 1, 19 on MT Samho Dream and 21 on MV Voc Daisy according to DFA records.
